I went to Greece towards the end of April this year and I was unable to wake up from this beautiful trip, it was so amazing. I visited both Athens and Santorini Island. Let me start with Athens, and get to Santorini later, watch this space.

When I arrive in Athens, there was a little unexpected situation – the last week of April was Greece Easter holiday, which is a week later than it was in Australia. I have planned 3 nights and 2 and half days in Athens, and the Sunday was Easter Sunday. All the tourist sites were closed, I was not able to visit any heritage as planned.

However, I had some Greek festival food that was made special for Easter holiday, painted eggs and roasted lamb. I have fallen in love with Greek food ever since, and trust me, I have never been impressed by Greek food before, and the real authentic Greek food is far beyond good compare to the greek food we had outside of Greece. I also enjoyed the singing and dancing at the restaurant, participated their traditional activity – smash a clay plate on the ground. It was a very special first day in Athens.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to realise the beauty of Athens, simply walking around the city is full of experiences, colourful houses, endless little street led to many lanes, where an interesting graffiti wall or a unique shop just around the corner. Or at the end of the street is a heritage location. I enjoyed walking in Athens city every single minute.

The next day, we were lucky enough that all the tourist sites were open, and we were able to visit most of ancient Greek locations. We went to Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Parthenon, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Theatre of Dionysus, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Arch of Hadrian, Panathenaic Stadium, Syntagma Square, Areopagus. Most of these places are located in the city centre area, if you stay in the centre of the Athens, they are walking distance. It usually takes 15-30 minutes depends on where you stay. If you are not a big fun of walking, a short taxi ride is not bad at all.

Athens is really magical, it is a contemporary city with countless ancient heritage spread all over the city. You might be driving on a busy road getting to office or shops, and next to you could be an ancient temple from thousands of years ago. Over here, history and civilisation are living together cohesively. The stones and marbles are part of people’s blood. I wasn’t part of the Greek ancient society, neither do I understand the history. The people here are the witness of the ancient Greece and continuously protecting their culture and treasure. What we are experiencing today is evolved from ancient civilisation, it takes centuries to get here. We should not forget about the history and where we are from.
